Carroll StreetThis garden completely transforms a yard that was simply astro-turf (artificial grass) with one large, beautiful Weeping Cherry tree. We were given a number of requirements for the new garden. Our client wanted a quiet retreat to work and escape from city life. They also wanted a soaking tub and to be surrounded by plants in a more open and natural landscape. Changing the topography and opening the fence brought movement and openness to the landscape even before the plants went in. A natural stone patio and walkway offer openings in the garden and a path to a series of cedar platforms that bring us to the retreat and soadking tub. The retreat and tub are also finished cedar, creating a consistent natural treatment of constructed elements through the garden. Beside the retreat and beneath the Cherry is a woodland garden, which the leads to a hidden garden filled with colorful shade perennials. Entering the garden from the house, you pass through a more formal garden, which then opens to a country garden filled with colorful shade perennials. Entering the garden from the house you pass thorugh a more formal garden, which then opens to a country garden filled with flowering perennials planted around the patio. Plants include Hyssop, Irises, Anemones, Echinacea and Rudbeckia. For structure, there is an evergreen Juniper, an Amelanchier and some large ornamental grasses. The partially new cedar fence includes integrated trellises, offering borrowed views, better air circulation and, as the vines mature and grow, more green and extended garden space. |
